Wireless

My views on wireless (802.11)

The standard 802.11 is not a very strict standard and there are protocol/features that are not widely supported or have poor interoperability

As such I would almost always recommend dedicated wireless access points over 'All in One' router/wireless and where possible disable the built in wireless if using some dedicated hardware

UniFi are the preferred wireless solution in most cases as they offer great management and features

WiFi 6 (802.11ax) is the latest standard and when these become available it would be wise to start investing in an access point that can support this standard due to the following features

  • Target Wake Time (TWT) - ability to sleep a wireless radio to conserve battery

  • Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) - Better channel management and channel duplexing

  • BSS Coloring - Less interruptions by noisy neighbors (other APs)
